Building a Guitar
Andy Powers started in Southern California where he grew up surrounded by music and woodworking. His father a carpenter instilled in him a love of craftsmanship, his love of music led him to build guitars. By the time he was a teenager he had built his first guitar, a sign of his commitment and the perfect blend of his woodworking skills and musical talent.
Powers early guitars, a sign of his talent and commitment, started to get noticed and he began taking on custom orders. His reputation as a meticulous and innovative guitar maker grew and he set up his own workshop where he hand built guitars known for their tone and playability.

Joining Taylor Guitars
In 2011 Powers’ career took a big turn when Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug asked him to join Taylor Guitars. Recognizing Powers’ talent and vision they brought him on board as Master Guitar Designer. This was the start of a new chapter for both Powers and Taylor Guitars.

One of Powers first major achievements was the redesign of the Taylor Grand Orchestra followed by the introduction of the 800 Series. This series was the result of Powers’ thinking outside the box and featured significant improvements in tonewoods, bracing and sound. He had proven himself as a forward thinking guitar maker not afraid to challenge the status quo.

Innovation and Sustainability
In 2022 Andy Powers took over as President and CEO of Taylor Guitars. Under his leadership the company has continued to innovate while focusing on sustainability. Powers has been instrumental in Taylor’s efforts to use sustainable tonewoods and reduce environmental impact so the instruments are of the highest quality and responsibly made.

One of Powers’ recent innovations is the Taylor GT (Grand Theater) series. The GT is a smaller guitar with the sound and playability of a full size guitar. This is a sign of Powers ability to blend tradition with modern design, meeting the needs of today’s musician while honoring the acoustic guitar’s heritage.

The Vision Goes On
Looking ahead, Andy Powers continues to focus on enhancing the player’s experience, whether through new guitar models or refining existing designs. He is also deeply involved in Taylor’s research and development, exploring new materials and technologies that could shape the future of guitar making.
One area of focus is the ongoing evolution of the V-Class bracing system, which Powers introduced in 2018. This innovative bracing design improves the guitar’s sustain, volume, and intonation, and Powers is constantly refining and expanding its application across different Taylor models.
In addition to his work on guitar design, Powers is passionate about mentoring the next generation of guitar makers. He frequently shares his knowledge and expertise, ensuring that the craft of guitar making continues to thrive.
