GIBSON ES339 V GIBSON ES335 who Wins?

At Colemans Music in Melbourne's CBD store, we are hosting a Gibson ES Death Match. Well, maybe not a Death Match, but a hotly contested playoff to decide who will hold the Title of the Best Gibson ES ever.

The Gibson ES-339 and the Gibson ES-335 are both iconic semi-hollow body guitars, but they serve slightly different purposes. Choosing a winner between the two really depends on what you’re looking for in terms of tone, comfort, and aesthetics. Here's a breakdown:

1. Size and Comfort

  • ES-335: The ES-335 is larger, with its traditional semi-hollow body. It's great for those who like the bigger feel of a semi-hollow body, and it provides more resonance and airiness.
  • ES-339: The ES-339 is a smaller, more compact version of the ES-335. It’s designed for players who want the semi-hollow tone but prefer a smaller, more comfortable guitar size—closer to a Les Paul. Easier for those who prefer a lighter guitar for long gigs or jam sessions.

Winner: ES-339 for comfort and portability. ES-335 for a more traditional feel.

2. Tone and Sound

  • ES-335: Known for its balanced tone—somewhere between a solid-body and a fully hollow guitar. It has a broad range, offering warm lows, clear highs, and a nice midrange, making it great for blues, jazz, and rock.
  • ES-339: While still delivering that signature semi-hollow sound, the smaller body of the ES-339 produces a slightly tighter, more focused tone. It may lack a bit of the airy warmth found in the larger ES-335 but is a bit punchier and more direct.

Winner: ES-335 for traditional semi-hollow warmth and resonance, ES-339 for a tighter, more focused sound.

3. Versatility

  • ES-335: A classic guitar that's been used across genres from jazz to blues to rock. Its bigger body offers more sustain and resonance.
  • ES-339: Offers a more modern take and the same versatility, but its compact design may appeal to players who transition between solid-body guitars and want a similar feel.

Winner: Tie. Both guitars are versatile but appeal to different playing styles.

4. Aesthetics and Feel

  • ES-335: Has a more traditional, vintage aesthetic, which may appeal to players who are drawn to the classic Gibson look and feel.
  • ES-339: The smaller size gives it a more modern look. Players who prefer smaller guitars will find it more visually appealing and easier to handle.

Winner: Depends on personal preference—ES-335 for vintage appeal, ES-339 for modern practicality.

5. Price

  • Typically, the ES-339 is a bit more affordable than the ES-335, but prices can vary depending on the exact model and year.

Winner: ES-339 if budget is a concern, but the ES-335 holds its value very well.

WINNERS are GRINNERS:

  • Winner for Vintage Tone and Classic Look: Gibson ES-335
  • Winner for Portability and Modern Comfort: Gibson ES-339

Both guitars are excellent choices, but the ES-339 may appeal more to modern players who want semi-hollow sound without the bulk, while the ES-335 will satisfy players who prefer the traditional Gibson semi-hollow experience.
