The Complete Story so far of Cole Clark Guitars

The Mystery of Cole Clark

The name "Cole Clark" might sound like one person, but the truth is more interesting. Cole Clark is actually a combination of the names of Adam Cole and Brad Clark, the founders of the company. Established in 2001 in Bayswater, Melbourne, Cole Clark Guitars has grown to become one of the most respected names in acoustic and hybrid guitars. Since 2012, Miles Jackson has led the company as CEO.

After Bradley Clark's departure in 2010, Miles Jackson, a former Billy Hyde executive, stepped in to guide the company through expansion. Jackson’s leadership coincided with the development of a third factory in Bayswater to increase production and further establish domestic and export markets.

A Focus on Acoustic Excellence

Cole Clark is renowned for its acoustic and hybrid acoustic/electric guitars. Although the company initially produced electric guitars, production shifted exclusively to acoustics in 2012 to refine their specialty. They also craft lap steels and bass guitars. The majority of Cole Clark instruments are proudly built in Australia, with the exception of the Studio models, which are produced both in Australia and China.

Cole Clark instruments blend traditional hand-building techniques with cutting-edge CNC technology. What sets them apart is their use of native Australian timbers, reinforcing a sustainable ethos while crafting unique, resonant instruments. Xavier Rudd famously recorded his album Spirit Bird using his custom-built 12-string Cole Clark guitar, the "Fat Lady."

Unique Construction Techniques

A hallmark of Cole Clark acoustic guitars is their use of Spanish heel or integral neck construction, a method rarely seen in mainstream steel-string acoustics. Unlike other guitars, where the body is built first and the neck is bolted or joined later, Cole Clark guitars feature necks that extend as one piece to the sound hole. This not only enhances resonance but also plays a vital role in accommodating their advanced pickup systems.

Another distinctive feature is the carved tops and backs, joined to the sides with a ridge system rather than traditional kerfing. This results in stronger, lighter guitars with a more responsive tonal quality.

The PG3 Pickup: A Natural Sound Revolution

Cole Clark's PG3 pickup system is acclaimed as the most natural-sounding acoustic pickup available. Designed to eliminate the "quack" often associated with piezo pickups, the PG3 uses three elements to capture different frequency ranges. Six loaded piezos handle the low end, while a face sensor captures mid to high frequencies, and a condenser microphone registers only the highest frequencies. This sophisticated blend creates a lifelike, organic sound when amplified.

Sustainability and Timbers

Cole Clark's commitment to sustainability is unmatched. Nearly 98% of their guitars contain no endangered woods, reflecting their status as the world's most sustainable guitar company. By sourcing native Australian timbers such as Blackwood, Sheoak, and Redwood, they ensure each guitar has a distinct tonal character while promoting environmental responsibility.
